Budapest. Following the trail of the past to a place my Ukrainian grandmother and her Hungarian sweetheart visited many, many times together and loved.
It’s the end of Craft Week and what a week it’s been! We made songs, rubber stamps, badges, linoprints, mobiles, drawings, paintings, poems, alpaca wool wristers, soap with a message, one-off t-shirts, skulls, postcards, thank you cards, videos, Super 8 movies, little time lapse movies and a cheese/potato pie. We visited books in their libraries, bakers in their bakeries, artists in their studios (Hoggie and Kathy Hinde, you blew my mind!). We were part of shows at The Cube and BEEF and The Museum of Somerset. We shared a lot of laughs and skills. Mondo appreciation to Joff, Simon, Lucy, Sonny, Emma, Tom, and Carl for the inspiration and collaboration!
A magnificent end to a magnificent project… The premiere of The Sound We See: A Somerset County Symphony brought filmmakers, vocalists, family and friends together at the Museum of Somerset for a night of pure cinematic wonder.
Thank you to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and British Council for supporting this collaboration through Cultural Exchange International. Thank you to the Engine Room/Somerset Film team for your generosity in welcoming us into your world. Thank you to Actiontrack Performance Company and the talented young singers for creating the soundtrack of our dreams. Thank you to Patrick, Imogen, Deb, Natalie, Andrew, Adrian, Barry, Kevin, Anna, Jenny, Janette, Bill, Angie, Stevie, Mary, Frank, Linda, Yolanda, Colin, Dan, Paul, Dave, Tom, Frances, Emma, Charlotte, Alex, Rob, Bron, Judy, David and Beckie for your bright spirits and beautiful visions. Thank you to the unforgettable people and places of Somerset County for inspiring us all!
Tomorrow is the Sound We See premiere and today is a flurry of activity as news teams from the local affiliates of the BBC and ITV descend on the Engine Room to vie for coverage of the big event. Although BBC’s Chief Somerset Correspondent Clinton Rogers suavely compliments me on prowess at fielding his hard-hitting questions and offers to volunteer at EPFC upon retirement, my interview ends up on the cutting room floor. That’s showbiz!
This afternoon, a visit to Spike Island to check out the latest exhibit and roam around the artist studios followed by a leisurely lounge in the (warm!) sunshine by the Bristol Docks. After a tasty Indian meal, it’s back to Joff’s for some collaborative musical activity with the incomparable Tom Stubbs and Emma Lazenby. Tonight’s tunes included the new hit singles “Joanne Woodward” (the enduring romance of Paul Newman and JW), “Chicken of the Woods” (mushrooms) and “I’m Really Gonna Lose It In A Minute With You” (inspired by the immortal words of Stephen Clarke).
