4.30.12: Queen’s Day!

Today is Koninginnedag, aka Queen’s Day, the national holiday that encourages citizens of the Netherlands to celebrate Queen Beatrix by wearing orange and hauling all unwanted stuff out of their houses and onto the public sidewalks and plazas for the most gigantic grassroots flea market ever. Although feelings on the Dutch monarchy may be mixed, everyone loves a party! It is the warmest, brightest, most jubilant day of the year. We meet Florian and Mariette at the Butt Plug Gnome at 8 am and stroll around the city, eyes peeled for special treasures among the dross: rare records for Mariette, old cameras and lenses for Florian, Super 8 home movies for Paolo and kitschy Dutch ephemera and dental tools for me. Scores galore!
