5.18.16: Hoot! Hoot!

One of the reasons we’re here in Tokyo is to celebrate Max’s year of homeschooling. It’s been a pretty incredible nine months of experience-based learning (in Vancouver, Los Angeles, Italy and Iceland; in kitchens, on sets of superhero tv shows, and at sculpture studios, Serbian delis and film centers…) and before he heads back to traditional high school in the fall, we wanted to come to the place that’s been on Max’s wish list for a looooooooooooooong time: JAPAN!

Since Max is keeping a daily journal, we’ve invited him to take over blog duties for Sell Your TV And Come To The Cinema this time around so without further ado… Here’s Max!

So yesterday we did a LOT of stuff. After being woken up early in the morning by the very loud crows (that sound completely different than Canadian crows), we walked around our Shibuya neighborhood and went to a huge park called the Meiji-Jingu where we saw a huge torii, soaked up the power-spot ambience of  Kiyomasa’s Well, made a wish at the Meiji shrine and got interviewed by some Japanese high school students. After, we wandered around a bit, got lost (twice) but eventually found our way back to Blum & Poe Tokyo, the amazing gallery that will be hosting The Sound We See: Tokyo. For lunch, we met up with Asuka, one of Paolo’s former students, and she took us to one of her favorite places: D47, on the top of the giant Hikarie mall with incredible views of the famous Shibuya Crossing. Besides the restaurant serving regional foods of Japan, there was a gallery with drawings by Yoko Ono and a shop selling beautiful fabrics, ceramics and other traditional design objects from throughout the country. When we were done taking it all in, we hopped on the subway, got lost again, but finally found the legendary Mohumohu, aka The Owl Café! The Owl Café is a little store on the fifth floor of a building in Shinjuku, where you get to hang out with owls! We took photos with them, pet them and they were even able to sit on our shoulders! It was a strange and memorable experience. By now it was night and walked around for an hour in the wild neon streets before finally choosing a ramen restaurant to eat at. We made our way home after and had an early bedtime.
