We’re locking ourselves in the filmwerkplaats this week for the final major component of The Sound We See: Rotterdam post-production… cutting the negative! Although Paolo has experience in this area, it’s all brand new to me and seems to entail extreme precision, concentration and cleanliness, none of which are exactly my strong points! But there’s no time like the present to hone another film-related skill and our friend Karel Doing is kind enough to drop by and give us a demonstration on the vintage ARRI machine, making it all look as easy as pie. The rest of the day is spent working on the EDL (that’s Edit Decision List to you, pal!), shooting the credits, organizing the cutting room, gathering the necessary supplies and equipment and all that jazz. In the evening, we take a trip to the apartment of our friends Leslie and Cor on the magical Noordereiland where friends are gathered for a cozy dinner party. While lightning flashes and the rain pours down outside, we enjoy some spirited conversation on art, politics and the I Ching along with a muy rico Mexican food fiesta accompanied by fancy beer made with muscat grapes and all topped off with March On Washington Chocolate Mousse. And just when it’s time to go, the thunder clouds pass and the rain lets up for an incredible bicycle ride home through a satiated, sleepy city…
