2.9.12: City of Delights

As we bicycle through the streets of Rotterdam each day, the city unfolds before us… an exquisite gift full of unexpected delights. Today’s discoveries include Occupy Rotterdam (located on the steps of the World Trade Center since October, they currently have about 40 active participants tending the site and hundreds of supporters), the main branch of Bilbliotheek Rotterdam (possibly the world’s coolest public library with space-age listening booths and an amazing poetry jukebox), Post Rotterdam (a former post office with sculpted buffalo heads and bee hives on on the facade converted into an indoor skating rink), and an artwork masquerading as an empty building.

  1. Well, selfishly I’m hoping it will warm up but I think you may get your wish… The Elfstedentocht (a 200-km speed skating competition on frozen waterways that connect eleven cities in the northern Netherlands) is supposed to take place this weekend for the first time since 1997!

    1. I actually did see a lady wearing some old school strap-on skates today, gliding on the pond outside the Netherlands Architecture Institute… Just tie ’em on, right over the shoes! Fabulous!
